When a certificate of analysis names an accredited laboratory, it is making a specific, checkable claim about how the result was produced — not just that a test was run, but that it was run under a recognized quality system.
Competence, not just a logo
Accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 is granted by an external accreditation body after assessing a laboratory's methods, equipment calibration, personnel competence, and quality management. It is renewed through periodic reassessment. A laboratory cannot simply award the standard to itself, which is what gives the mark its weight.
Method validity
The standard requires that analytical methods be validated and fit for purpose, and that results carry a defensible estimate of measurement uncertainty. For a buyer this means a reported purity or identity figure is anchored to a documented procedure rather than an undescribed in-house shortcut.
Traceability of measurement
ISO/IEC 17025 emphasizes metrological traceability: instruments are calibrated against references, and results can be traced back through an unbroken chain. That is the analytical foundation beneath a number on a certificate, and it is what lets two laboratories compare results meaningfully.
What to check on a COA
Confirm the issuing laboratory names ISO/IEC 17025, lists an accreditation number, and states the scope of accreditation that covers the methods used. An accreditation that does not actually cover the method on the report is a gap worth questioning.
Why procurement should care
